Hi! This Memorial Day we remember with gratefulness the sacrifice of many for our country. We have so much to be thankful for as we continue to live in the United States of America.
In this Memorial Day letter to you, I share a short story about my father in honor of him. But first, I’d like to tell you a little bit about him!
My father served for five years in the United States Navy. During this time he committed his life to following Jesus, and I am eternally grateful that he did! After leaving the Navy he farmed, taught school and coached in Nebraska. He then joined the Navigators, a Christian organization that focuses on discipleship. My father and his sweetheart–my mother Joyce, shared over 66 years of marriage. Last year at the age of 89, my father went to be with Jesus.
And now, the short story:
One of my father’s favorite hymns is Trust and Obey. My father not only sang the words to this hymn he lived them! He truly lived in the light of God’s Word. He trusted God and purposed to obey Him every day.
I have delightful memories of my father enthusiastically leading us in singing! My mother would play the piano and we would sing with friends in our home or at conferences with large groups of people. He was a great song leader and he knew how to encourage us to sing wholeheartedly!
He also knew how to encourage us to think on the words of the songs we were singing. Sometimes he would stop us in the middle of singing a song and ask for a Bible verse that was meaningful to us and that related to the words of the song. That sure helped us to think about what we were singing! And sometimes as he was leading the singing he would look me straight in the eye with a great big smile on his face and a genuine sparkle in his eye. Oh, what that did for his daughter’s heart.
My father is in heaven now, yet I can imagine him with a big smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye saying to us all, “Keep trusting in the Lord! Keep obeying Him! For there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

As a young daughter my parents encouraged me to memorize Scripture verses. I memorized Isaiah 41:10 and it became one of my favorite verses.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10
As an adult I continue to treasure Isaiah 41:10. And I can say with confidence that God has always been faithful to His Word. Praise Him! He is worthy of all our trust.
