Verse Study

Would you like a simple, yet creative and fun way to encourage discussion and increase comprehension of a Bible verse
that you are memorizing with your child?

Enjoy “A Crayon Verse Study”!
Suggested Memory Verses
Suggested Ages: 3-10

Prepare:

– Write or print Psalm 136:1 with large letters on paper. Make copies for you and your child.

– Give your child their Psalm 136:1 paper along with a pink, green, purple, blue, and orange crayon or other crayon colors of your choice.

– Explain that you are going to do a “Crayon Verse Study” together.

– Read Psalm 136:1 out loud.

– Pray together and ask the Lord to give you understanding as you study.

Notes:

If your child cannot read, as you follow the steps below, read the verse out loud for them each time you ask a new question so that they can once again think on the verse and answer your question. 

If your child is very young, it will probably be best to keep the answers simple, focusing on the overall meaning of the verse. If they are older, it would be great to encourage more discussion.

Study:

Think! What is the first word in Psalm 136:1? What does the word “Give” mean?

Color! Draw a rectangle around the word “Give” with your pink crayon and color in the rectangle.

Think! What does Psalm 136:1 tell us we are to give? What do we mean when we say “Thanks?”

Color! Draw a green oval around the word ‘thanks’ and color in the oval.

Think! To whom are we to give thanks? Who is the Lord?

Color! Draw a purple circle around the word “Lord” and color in the circle.

Think! What words tell us about God? What do the words good and mercy mean to you?

Color! Draw blue squares around the words “good and mercy” and color in the squares.

Think! How long does God’s mercy last? How long is forever?

Color! Use the orange crayon to draw a cloud around the words ‘for ever’.

Pray: Thank God that He is good and that His mercy endures forever.
IDEA!

Enjoy the “Crayon Verse Study” using other Bible verses.

Use this “Crayon Verse Study” activity to introduce each of your new Bible memory verses.

If you plan to continue to do this activity with other Bible verses, you may want to have your child keep their “Crayon Verse Study” papers in their own “Crayon Verse Study” folder.

If you are doing this with an older child, you and they could look up cross references that relate to the verse you are studying and then talk about how the cross references help to understand the meaning of the original verse of study.

This was one of my favorite ideas yet! My kids (ages 5,4,2) really enjoyed doing this Bible verse study. It helped me teach the verse, and helped them understand it! Thank you for this idea:)

Are you interested in an activity that will help your child memorize a Bible verse or review Bible memory verse(s) while giving them an opportunity to stretch their legs and move about?

Play “Follow Me!”

Suggested Memory Verses

Suggested Ages: 2-10

 

1. Write or Collect:

Write Genesis 1:1 or a Bible verse of your choice. Or collect the Memory Verse Cards (MVC) you already have.

2. Walk:

Have your child stand behind you and then follow you wherever you go. Take the MVCs with you.

3. Stop!

When you choose to stop, have your child stop as well.

4. Say

Say a verse selected from the MVCs in your hand. If you have one Bible memory verse card, then each time you stop, say that verse. If you have more than one memory verse card, say a different verse each time you stop. If your child is able, they can say the verse with you or for you.

5. Continue:

Continue to “walk, stop and say” until you decide you are done!

6. Examples for playing “Follow Me” outside:

– walk to a tree, and stand by the tree trunk to say the verse
– walk to the driveway and lie down to say the verse
– walk over to the backdoor and knock on the door, then say the verse
– walk to any playground equipment you own and swing on a swing, or slide down the slide while saying the verse
– walk to your car and sit in the car for fun while saying the verse

IDEAS!

– Run, jump, skip or hop instead of walking to your next destination.
– Have your child lead if they are mature enough to do so.
– When it is too hot, cold or wet outside, you can do this inside, using a table to sit under, a bed to lie on, the basement to walk around in, and couch to sit on.

BIBLE TIME!

Play “Follow Me” as part of a simple Bible Time with your child. Follow three steps:

1. SING: Sing a song to the Lord.
2. BIBLE: Play “Follow Me” following the directions above.
3. PRAY: Then talk to God in prayer.

Colorful Picture

Would you like a simple, yet creative and fun way to encourage discussion and increase comprehension of a Bible verse that you are memorizing with your child?

Create “A Colorful Picture”!
Suggested Memory Verses
Suggested Ages: 2-12

 

1. Write:

Write Genesis 1:1 or a Bible verse of your choice. Include the Bible verse reference. Write the verse on the bottom, side, or top of the paper leaving most of the page blank for a drawing.  

2. Discuss:

Show your child the paper with the memory verse on it. Talk about the verse. Ask, “What is the verse saying?” Explain any unknown words or phrases. Brainstorm about what your child could draw on the verse paper to help tell about the verse.  

3. Draw and Color:

Provide crayons, markers or colored pencils. Have your child draw and color a picture on the verse paper. Give them time to think and create. It may take several days for an older child to complete the picture, depending on how much detail they include in the picture. This simple process can help your child develop a deeper understanding of the Bible verse.  

4. Show and Tell:

When your child is done with their picture, have them show it to you and tell you what it is about. If your child is 2 or 3 years old, you may have to help them tell about the picture by asking them questions, making some probable guesses and then talking about the drawing yourself. Asking your child to talk about their picture gives them the opportunity to continue to think on the meaning of the verse and gives you the opportunity to enjoy their creativity and to praise them for their work.  

5. Review:

Say the memory verse again while looking at the Colorful Picture. Remember to include the Bible reference before and after you say the verse. If your child is old enough to talk, they can try to say it with you. If your child can read, they can read or say the memory verse to you.  

IDEA!
Put the Colorful Picture somewhere in your house for all to see. When it is time to take the picture down, you could save it in a three ring binder using a page protector. As more Colorful Pictures are made and added to the binder, the binder will become a Bible Verse Picture Book that can be used for memory verse review.
BIBLE TIME!

Enjoy creating a Colorful Picture as part of a Bible Time with your child. Follow three simple steps:

1. SING: Start with singing a song to the Lord.
2. BIBLE: Have your child color a Bible Verse Picture and then talk about it, follow the directions above.
3. PRAY: Then talk to God in prayer.

FAMILY!
This is a great activity to enjoy with the whole family! Have each person create their own Colorful Picture about the same Bible verse. Talk about the finished pictures, and say the Bible verse together.

Our memory verse right now is Ephesians 5:20. The kids loved the idea of writing out and illustrating “their” verse:) while it might be hard for anyone else to distinguish what they colored, it was a blessing to hear them explain their special pictures. Each one had totally different ideas for what they were thankful for. This was a simple yet neat idea; one that I would do again!! The kids really enjoyed it. And it was a great way to talk about the truth/verse again!

Hide It! Find It!

Are you interested in an activity that will help your child memorize a Bible verse while giving them an opportunity to stretch their legs and move about?

Play “Hide It! Find It!”
Suggested Bible Memory Verses
Suggested Ages: 2-8

1. Write:

Write Genesis 1:1 or a Bible verse of your choice on a card if you have not already done so.

2. Hide

Hide the Memory Verse Card (MVC) in a room of your house while your child is not looking. For example, under a couch pillow with a piece of the card peeking out.

3. Look

Have your child then come into the room and look for the card.

4. Find and Say:

When your child finds the MVC, express excitement and then say the verse. Remember to say the Bible reference before and after you say the verse. Your child can join you in saying the verse if they are able.

5. Again!

Hide and find the memory verse card again! And again!

(Note: When you have more than one memory verse card, you can hide the cards all at once and then your child can find each one. Say the verses one by one as they are found or say all of the verses after all the cards are collected.)

BIBLE TIME!

Play “Hide It! Find It!” as part of a simple Bible Time with your child. Follow three simple steps:

1. SING: Sing a song to the Lord.
2. BIBLE: Enjoy “Hide It! Find It!” following the directions above.
3. PRAY: Talk to God in prayer.

FAMILY!
“Hide It! Find It!” is a great activity to enjoy with the family after you have created multiple Bible memory verse cards. (If siblings are participating in this activity, it is a good idea to assign how many cards each person can find so that your youngest child has the opportunity to find cards along with your older children.)

Carpet Picture

Create “A Carpet Picture”!
Suggested Memory Verses
Suggested Ages: 2-5
 
 

1. Write:

Write Genesis 1:1 or a Bible verse of your choice on a card. You will then be able to easily refer back to the memory verse on the card as you memorize the verse together.

Notes:
– Genesis 1:1 is a great beginning verse to memorize with your child. It provides foundational truth for establishing a Biblical worldview.
– You may want to add stickers. Putting a colorful sticker on your memory card adds visual interest and it will be useful for identifying the Bible verse in the future.

2. Say:

Say or read the Bible memory verse while your child is listening. Share with your child that the two of you are going to make a Carpet Picture that will tell about your Bible memory verse.

 

3. Make:

Make a picture frame on your carpet. You could use a jump rope, or yarn, or toy building blocks, or pencils, etc. Have your child help you create a square, rectangular, or circular picture frame. Make the frame large enough to hold multiple objects.

 

4. Collect:

Encourage your child to collect objects from around the house. These objects will be placed inside the picture frame you just made. Have them choose only objects that relate to the meaning of the memory verse.

(For example: For Genesis 1:1, collect toy animals, a world globe or atlas, toy people, or dolls to represent people, a small plant, etc. Or, for Ephesians 4:32, collect a water bottle, band aides, a blanket, a tissue etc. Things we can use to help us be kind to someone else in need.)

 

5. Talk:

Have your child put the objects in the picture frame. Then talk about how each of the items chosen relate to the meaning of the Bible verse.

(For example, for Genesis 1:1 “Here is a toy duck. Who makes real ducks? God does. Here is a green plant. Who makes plants and trees? Yes, God does!
Or, for Ephesians 4:32, “Here is a water bottle. How can we use a water bottle to help us be kind to someone else? Yes, we can…..)

 

6. Review

Say the memory verse while sitting on the floor by your Carpet Picture. Remember to include the Bible reference before and after you say the verse. If your child is old enough to talk, they can try to say it with you. If your child has memorized the verse, they can say the memory verse to you.

IDEA!

Keep the Carpet Picture set up until your husband has a chance to see it. Place your memory verse card (MVC) beside the Carpet Picture. Have your child tell your husband about the Carpet Picture. Then they can say the Bible memory verse together using the MVC as a guide if needed.

BIBLE TIME!

Enjoy creating a Carpet Picture as part of a Bible Time with your child. Follow three simple steps:

1. SING: Start with singing a song to the Lord.
2. BIBLE: Create a Carpet Picture and talk about it, following the directions above.
3. PRAY: Then talk to God in prayer.

We don’t have any carpet, but here’s our wood picture:)

The verse we chose was Ephesians 5:20.

The kids all loved gathering things they were thankful for! Special Blankets, books, The Bible, baby dolls, balls, etc. and we added a calendar to represent “always”.

Then we took turns taking things out of our picture and thanking God for each thing. The kids really enjoyed the exercise, and the verse stuck with my visual learners really well!!! Thank you for sharing this idea:) I look forward to doing this again and trying out more of your ideas:)
