Christmas Caroling

A fun Christmas memory many of us may share is caroling as a family!

Caroling is a great way to praise the Lord, to share the truth of Christmas with others and to encourage the listener’s hearts as well as our own!

This year, in consideration for everyone’s health, caroling may need to look different, but no worries! This could be the year to carol by phone or via an online platform!

Reach out, sing a carol and share Christmas greetings! With some calls you may also want to chat a little, share a Bible verse and pray together. Each call can be personalized for the people you are calling.

TO PREPARE

In preparation for caroling, you may like to gather as a family and make a list of the people you would like to carol. You may also like to take time to pray for each of the people on your list, and to ask God to prepare your hearts and theirs for your time together for His glory.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SONGBOOK

If you are looking for a songbook with Christmas carols, you may like to consider using a small songbook titled: “A Classic Christmas Caroling Songbook” by Hendrickson Publishers. It includes 30 sing-along favorites. Our family has found this songbook to be an inexpensive and useful resource.

May the Lord use your family to encourage others in a special way this Christmas season.

SIX IDEAS FOR SINGING

MORNING: Sing one or more of the carols at the beginning of Bible Time with your children. Take a few minutes to talk about the meaning of the words in the carol.

CAR: Keep a copy of the carols in your car. As you are in the car with your children, sing the carols together!

WALKING: Take a walk with your children. Sing a carol as you walk!

CHAIR: Sing a carol as you snuggle together in a comfy chair.

DINNER: Each night, before dinner, place a copy of one of the carols at each person’s place at the dinner table. Sing one or more verses of the carol together before you pray and thank the Lord for your food.

BEDTIME: As you put your child to bed, ask your child what carol he/she would like you to sing. Sing the carol as you rub your child’s back.

Three Questions

Isn’t it wonderful to know that as we prepare to celebrate a Christ centered Christmas with our families we can pray and ask the Lord for His guidance?!

And as we wait on the Lord, we can ask ourselves three simple questions:

1. What Christmas carols would we like to sing?
2. What Bible verses would we like to enjoy?
3. What activities would we like to do together?

If you would you like some ideas as you contemplate answers to these questions, I welcome you to join me on the upcoming Christmas posts! With our answers to the above three questions in hand we can look forward to a refreshing and peaceful Christmas, focusing on the Lord and His love for us.

From My Mother

My mother loves the Lord and enjoys celebrating special occasions with family and friends. As a daughter in her home, I watched her decorate, set a pretty table, prepare food, have activities ready and warmly welcome guests. What an amazing example she is to me!

When asked if she would be willing to answer a few questions relating to Thanksgiving with the intent of sharing them with you on the Mom Blog, she kindly agreed.

Mom, you brought music into our home as I was growing up. What is a hymn that you like to sing during the Thanksgiving season?

“We Gather Together.”

What makes this hymn meaningful to you?

Growing up, our family would gather at Grma Hagemeister’s home with two of my uncle’s families to have Thanksgiving dinner together. After dinner and dishes were done, my uncle Lee would gather us together around the piano to sing. He would say to me, “Joyce, you play the piano.” So, I did. Uncle Lee and Aunt Alice both had beautiful voices and helped all of us to sing better! ☺ Our singing would last over an hour.

What is a verse that you like to meditate on during the Thanksgiving season?

Psalm 92:1

What makes the Psalm 92:1 meaningful to you?

This verse is easy to learn and say and so it comes to mind throughout the day.

As you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, what are a few things that come to mind that you are thankful for?

I’m thankful for Jesus and that He loves me and gave His life for me. I’m thankful for the 66½ years I had with Harve before he went to live with Jesus. I’m thankful for our three daughters, two sons in laws and five grandchildren who all love Jesus. And I’m thankful for each new day to live for Him!

What word of encouragement would you have for us as mothers as we celebrate Thanksgiving with our families this year?

To mothers I would say, be in the Word of God daily yourselves so that you get to know Jesus more personally day by day. Children watch and observe even when you think they are not watching what you do. Mothers, be praying for your children every day. And share with your children throughout the day too!

Thank-you Mom. You are a blessing!

Word Search

Interested in a Word Search to enjoy with your family this Thanksgiving?

We’ve got you covered! It has become a tradition for our family to complete a Word Search at our Thanksgiving table. This is the first year however, that we have created Word Searches. And we are happy to share them with you!

Print the two Word Search pages found in the download below and you’ll be ready to go! One Word Search is for younger children who can read and the other Word Search is for older children and adults. Both Word Search pages focus on words that remind us of what to be truly thankful for. Enjoy!

A note: Often when we enjoy Word Searches as a family I remember our friend Shelby who is a part of our Mom Blog community. She has enjoyed Word Searches with our family and wow, is she fast! Her pen would go down, all words being found, way before others were done! Sending smiles your way Shelby!

How Many Words!

Are you looking for another simple and fun activity to enjoy with your family this Thanksgiving?

Enjoy: How Many Words!

1. Paper and Pencil

Give each person a piece of paper and a pencil. (If you have children who have yet to learn to read and write, assign them a partner to work with.)

2. Title

Have each person/partner team write the word “Thanksgiving” on the top of their paper.

3. Go

Tell them that when you say “Go!” they are to write down as many words as they can using only the letters found in the word “Thanksgiving.”

Also, encourage everyone to see how many words they can come up with (using the letters in “Thanksgiving”) that describe something they are thankful for.

4. Stop

When you say “Stop!” have everyone count how many words they were able to make.

5. Share

Share your list of words with each other. Talk about the words that describe something family members are thankful for and encourage them to share why. Have fun!
