Best Time of Day for Bible Time

Wondering what would be the best time of day for Bible Time for your family? Consider your answers to the following questions:

At what time of day are my children most alert and ready to learn?

At what time of day will Bible Time be given first place over academics?

At what time of day will Bible Time communicate to my children that God and His Word take first place in our lives?

Our family found that the best time of day for Bible Time was in the morning after breakfast and before academics.

Be encouraged! As we have experienced, God will take care of your children’s need for academics as you honor Him and obey His Word.

When to Begin Bible Time

No matter how old or young your children are at this moment, now is the time to enjoy Bible Time with them.

Your child can begin listening to God’s Word being read while still in the womb!

Your child can begin to study the Bible and respond in obedience to what is studied at a very young age.

Your child can begin to memorize Bible verses even before learning to talk!

It is never too early to begin Bible Time. And just as a newborn baby is ready for milk and not solids, so the type and amount of spiritual food we serve our children will vary according to their age and ability to spiritually digest that food.

“like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,” 1 Peter 2:2

Scripture Memory Placemats

Are you looking for another way to be consistent as you enjoy memorizing and reviewing Scripture verses with your children?

Try Scripture Memory Placemats!

Suggested Ages: 6 – Adult

These placemats are simple to make and easy to use. This post will share the supplies you will need and how to make and use the placemats.

Supplies

– Plastic or vinyl placemats (one for each family member)
– Packaging tape
– Clear plastic page protectors (one for each family member)
– Scissors

How to Make

Tape a plastic page protector onto each placemat leaving the right hand side of the page protector open. (You may want to carefully cut off the slim edge of each page protector that has the punched holes in it.)

How to Use

Write or print your chosen Bible memory verse on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper. Make a copy for you and each of your children. (Idea! Use Draw the Word memory verse pages.)

Have each person slide their prepared memory verse page into their page protector on the placemat. (These page protectors help protect the memory verse pages from inevitable spills and crumbs at the table.)

Have each of your children place their completed Scripture Memory Placemat at their place on your table. Each time you all sit down to eat, your Bible memory verse will be there, ready for you to read or review together!

When your children are ready to memorize a new Bible verse, have them remove their memory verse page from their Scripture Memory Placemat and then put in a new memory page! (You may like to have your children put their former memory verse page into their own three ring Scripture Memory Notebook for further review.)

Dad’s Scripture Memory Placemat

If you and your children make memory verse pages or Draw the Word pages while your husband is working, each time a new page is completed, copy one of your children’s pages for your husband’s Scripture Memory Placemat. This can be a highlight for each child as their page is chosen for Dad to use at the table.

Scripture Memory Tablecloth

Use a clear plastic tablecloth, instead of placemats! Have your children slip their memory verse page or Draw the Word page under the plastic table cloth at their place. (Thank-you, Kim for sharing this great idea!)

How Much Bible Time?

How much time should you invest in the spiritual growth of your children each day? This is a truly vital question to ask and answer.

Let’s think about teaching children math for a moment. We know that it’s important to teach children math and we begin to teach them to count when they are very young. We don’t wait for them to be old enough to begin formal math instruction before introducing them to numbers.

When formal math instruction begins, it often takes place every school day.  We know that children will most likely struggle with math if they are sent to a math class only once a week. And, we do not hope that children will develop their math skills by just hearing someone talk about it. Often, math instruction is given 5 days a week and math practice is a must!

How many hours would it be if we calculated the time spent learning math from kindergarten to high school? Let’s see. Five days a week, a half hour to an hour for a math lesson a day, plus time spent on math assignments for 12 years. I am not going to take the time to calculate that here, but you get the point!  A lot of hours are spent on math. And that is a good thing! Math is important to know.

Now, let’s think about this in light of Bible Time. We would agree that your children’s spiritual growth is far more important than their mathematical skills.

And, if you truly believe this, you will make sure that you invest a significant portion of time each day in the spiritual growth of your children.

Why Bible Time

Why should you have Bible Time with your children? Let’s take a look at three great reasons.

REASON 1: In Deuteronomy 11:18-19 God tells parents to have His Word in their hearts and to daily teach His Word to their children.

“You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
“You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.
Deuteronomy 11:18-19

Bible Time can help you diligently obey God’s command to teach His Word to your children. It is a simple and practical way to help your children grow in their knowledge of God and His Word. This can in turn help your children to grow in their personal relationship with Christ.

REASON 2: In Proverbs 1:8 sons are told to listen to their father’s instruction and to not forsake their mother’s teaching. This is important for daughters as well. And for children to be able to do this, fathers need to be instructing and mothers need to be teaching! Bible Time offers a consistent time for parents to instruct and teach their children.

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck.
Proverbs 1:8-9

In Proverbs 1:9 we are told that as fathers instruct and mothers teach their sons and as their sons listen to and embrace this instruction and teaching, the instruction and teaching will be a graceful wreath to their sons’ heads and ornaments about their necks. Bible Time offers the opportunity for this to be your children’s experience.

REASON 3: Having Bible Time with your children begins a natural lifestyle habit for your children of consistently spending time with God in His Word and prayer. This provides a natural “gateway” for them to one day begin to have their own Quiet Time. Time alone with God reading the Bible and talking to Him in prayer. And a Quiet Time has the potential to greatly impact your child’s personal relationship with Christ.

What is Bible Time

What IS Bible Time? Great question! Join me as we take a look at how Bible time is defined on the Mom Blog.

Bible Time is an intentional time of day. It is deliberate, purposeful, planned for and does take time. It comes first. Other things will have to wait. Some things may need to go.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33

Bible Time is time spent with your children. Time engaged with your children as you invest in them spiritually. This is personal time. Precious time. Time with those God has given to you.

So teach us to number our days,
That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

Bible Time is an intentional time to share your love for God and His Word with your children. As parents we need to be daily cultivating our love for God and His Word in our own lives in order to do this.

O how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day. Psalm 119:97

Bible Time is part of your life. Who you are. What you do. It is a means of cultivating your children’s understanding of God and His Word. Of helping your children grow in their personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. Colossians 2:6,7

Bible Time is enjoying a spiritual meal with your children. A time to sing to the Lord, to delight in and “eat” God’s Word and to pray.

Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16

Bible Time as defined in this handbook is not a school subject, is not a curriculum and is not a set of rules.
