Ready, Say, Go!

Ready, Say, Go! is a great activity to enjoy outdoors as you and your children review memorized verses together.

Play “Ready, Say, Go!”

All Ages

TO PLAY

1. Ready
Choose a starting line. It may be the edge of your sidewalk or driveway. Have your children stand behind the starting line.

2. Say
Say the chosen memorized verse together.

3. Go!
After saying the memorized verse together tell your children that when you say “Go!” they are to run to a place you specify in your yard and then touch it. (This could be a tree, the corner of your house, your car, etc.) After touching the designated object they are to come back to the starting line as fast as they can.

Say “Go!” and enjoy watching your children run or you can run with them! Repeat these three steps as many times as you like. You may want to review a different memorized verse each time your children are ready to run again.

Suggestions

1. Take your Memory Verse Cards outside with you for reference.

2. If you have older children and younger children enjoying this activity together, you may want to assign partners, pairing older siblings with younger ones. Encourage them to run together holding hands.

Pop Up!

Ready for another fun way to memorize and/or review a Bible memory verse with your children?

Enjoy “Pop Up!”

All Ages

TO PLAY

1. Chairs

Make a row of chairs. Include one chair for each of your children. Have each of your children sit down on one of the chairs.

2. Pop Up Word

Choose a word from the memory verse to be the “Pop Up Word.” Tell your children the Pop Up Word you have chosen.

3. Pop Up!

Say the memory verse. When your children hear you say the Pop Up Word they are to quickly pop up off their chair and then sit back down again. Choose another word from the memory verse and repeat. Enjoy! 🙂

FUN VARIATIONS!

1. Have your children listen for more than one “Pop Up Word” in a single saying of the verse, popping up each time a Pop Up Word is said.

2. Give the first child in the row the first word of the verse, the second child
the second word of the verse, the third child the third word of the verse, etc. Have your children Pop Up for their word only.

3. Popcorn! Give each of your children a different Pop Up word in varying order along the row. The child at the end of the row may have the first word, the child in the middle may have the second word etc. Again have them Pop Up for their given Pop Up word only. They will look like popcorn popping! Fun!!

SUGGESTIONS!

1. Once your children have memorized the verse, have them say the verse with you as they enjoy playing “Pop Up!”

2. Always say the Bible memory verse reference before and after the verse. This is important. It will help your children memorize the Bible reference, enabling them to remember where the verse is found and giving them the ability to find it in their Bibles at any time.

3. For variety have your children pick Pop Up Words.

MORE IDEAS!
Your children may come up with even more ideas on how to enjoy “Pop Up!” That’s great! This activity can be enjoyed over and over again.

O God Our Help in Ages Past

So many wonderful hymns are full of truth from the Scriptures! As you enjoy singing hymns with your children, your children will begin to lay up these truths in their hearts. And these hymns can remain with them, ready in their hearts to one day be sung with the next generation.

Hymns comfort, encourage, lift up our eyes to Jesus and renew our spirits. Let’s keep singing hymns!!

Note: This hymn is included in First Place Plans 3A and 3B.

O God Our Help in Ages Past

Verse 1
O God our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Verse 2
Under the shadow of Thy throne,
Still may we dwell secure,
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

Verse 3
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

Verse 4
O God our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guide while life shall last,
And our eternal home.

Words: Isaac Watts

Our Help

Psalm 121

Voice: Marian Thomsen | Harp by Kristen Thomsen | "L'cha Dodi" Arrangement © 1987 by Sylvia Woods, Woods Music and Books Publishing - Used with Permission

Let’s be like a tree. Like a tree that is planted by water. A tree ready to bring forth fruit in its season. Let’s plant ourselves by the living water of God’s Word. Come be refreshed as we meditate on God’s Word together.

Psalm 121

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

New to Like a Tree?

Psalm 1:1-3 encourages us to meditate on God’s Word day and night. God tells us that when we do, we will be like a tree planted by water. A fruitful tree. A tree that stays fresh and green. Join me on Like a Tree as we meditate on God’s Word together.

Memory Keeper

Pulling an old packing box off a storage shelf in our basement I set it on the floor. Eagerly opening the box my eyes went to a row of stenograph notebooks. Reading the dates on the outside of these notebooks I selected a stack to take upstairs.

Back upstairs, I began the search, flipping through pages in one of the notebooks. Intent on my purpose I continued searching through other notebooks. I was looking for dates and information concerning our daughters when they were young. Not being one to keep a diary or journal of our everyday experiences as our daughters were growing up, I went to what I did have, my Quiet Time Journals!

Years ago I began to save my yearly Quiet Time Journals. I am so very grateful that although we have moved a lot, these journals have come along with us move after move.

As I was looking in some of my Quiet Time Journals for the information I wanted, I became intrigued with my daily Quiet Time entries from years ago. Weeks later, these journals have not been returned to the packing box but are still upstairs in our bedroom and I am taking a slow walk down memory lane. Memories not just of daily happenings in my life but more importantly memories of my walk with God. How God was teaching me, helping me, growing me, and walking with me through life. My struggles, my fears, answered prayer, joys, thoughts, hopes and dreams. This “memory walk” is going to take a while. I don’t mind. There is so much to savor and process as I relive God’s work in my life.

And there are more storage boxes in our basement that hopefully hold more of my Quiet Time Journals of yesteryear!

Why do I share this? I’m finding that it is so eye opening, so precious, and so encouraging to look back over the years and see God’s loving and daily work in my life and my heart desires for you to one day have this amazing experience too.

Please keep spending time alone with your Savior and Friend! Keep reading His Word each day. Keep talking to Him in prayer. Keep writing down Bible verses God uses to speak to your heart. Keep writing down what He is teaching you.

If you have yet to start having a Quiet Time, be encouraged! You can start today and continue for the rest of your life. And the practice of using a Quiet Time Journal can be quite simple. If you are like me, you may find that your journal entries are not very long. On my journal page, before reading my Bible, I like to write the days date, the abbreviated day of the week and what I plan to read that day (from a Bible reading plan). For example:

4/10/20 FRI Psalm 46

After reading, I usually write down one Bible verse that speaks to my heart from my Bible reading. A few lines in response to the verse usually follow. The lines may be a short prayer to the Lord or a thought I have relating to the verse I chose or something I want to be sure to do in response to the verse I chose. Most of my entries are this simple! Sometimes I do write more, and there are also infrequent days when I write the date and day, the Bible reading reference and the words: “Read and prayed”. For me, keeping my Quiet Time entries simple makes it a practical and doable daily habit.

And I’m delighted to say that my Quiet Time Journal not only helps me spend time with the Lord and grow in Him, it is also a wonderful Memory Keeper! 🙂

What is something you enjoy about your Quiet Time Journal? I’d love to hear about it. Comment below!
