Alphabet Praise

Alphabet Praise is a creative way to praise the Lord in prayer with your children! All you need are some index cards, markers, pencils or pens.

HOW to PREPARE

1. Letter A – Write the letter A on one side of an index card.

2. Characteristics or Attributes – Brainstorm with your children for characteristics or attributes of God that starts with the letter A. (For example: Almighty) Write your chosen word next to or beneath the letter A on the card.

3. Bible Verse – Find a Bible verse that talks about God having the characteristic/attribute you have chosen. (A Bible concordance is useful for finding a relevant verse.) Write the Bible verse on the index card. You may want to use the other side of the index card for this.

Continue the above three steps with each letter of the alphabet. You may want to create a few cards a day with your children until all 26 cards are completed. (This activity is not only great for prayer, but is also a wonderful Bible study activity, offering opportunity for much discussion about who God says He is in His Word.)

HOW to USE

Mother Explains – When we see someone demonstrate a good character quality, for example, when we see someone being kind, we can tell them, “You are kind!” When we tell them they are kind, we are praising them. In the same way, when read in the Bible about God’s amazing character quality of being kind, or when we experience His kindness, we can praise God by saying, “You are kind!”

Pass out Alphabet Praise Cards – Sit in a circle. Give yourself and each child one Alphabet Praise prayer card.

Mother Prays – Explain that you are going to take turns praising the Lord using the Alphabet Praise cards as a guide and that you will pray first. Read the Bible verse on your card out loud. Then pray, praising the Lord for His character quality found in the Bible and written on your card. For example: “Dear Heavenly Father, You are Almighty!”

Children Pray – Have each child follow your example, reading the Bible verse on their card out loud. Then encourage them to praise the Lord using the word on his/her card.

When everyone has had a chance to pray, collect the prayer cards to use again another day.

Idea 1

Pray Again – If you have older children, they may want to pray around the circle more than once, using different praise cards each time.

Idea 2
Personal Card Sets – Older children may enjoy creating their own Alphabet Praise card set.
Idea 3

Rotational Prayer – When our daughters were young, I found a weekly rotational prayer schedule was a great way to add variety and interest to our prayer times together. You may like to use the Alphabet Praise cards on one day of the week and have other prayer focuses on other days of the week.

For example:

Monday – Praise the Lord: Alphabet Praise Cards
Tuesday – Pray for Neighbors: My Street
Wednesday – Pray for Family and Friends: Who? What? Cards
Thursday – Pray for Our Country
Friday – Pray for Missionaries

Who? What? Cards

Who? What? Cards offer a simple, fun and creative way to pray for family and friends with your children. These cards can be found in the S&D prayer resource, titled My Family, My Friends.

Cardstock!

When printing the Who? What? Cards we recommend using colored cardstock. The cards will be more durable and the color adds a touch of fun!

Pray Again!

Who? What? Cards can be used over and over again. After you have used the cards in prayer with your children, shuffle the cards before putting them away. The next time you pray together, the requests and names will be in a different order and therefore you will most likely be praying different requests for each person! Enjoy!

My Thank-You Book

Do you have a baby, toddler or preschooler in your family? Or, are you a grandmother who is blessed with little grandchildren? If so, this video is for you! On this video I share how to make a little book that you can use with your child or grandchild as you help him/her begin to learn how to talk to God in prayer focusing on thanksgiving.

How to Make This Book:

Take and print pictures of people, places and things in your child’s world. Put the pictures into a little photo book (search online for photo book using the words “plastic photo book for 4×6 pictures”). Or, print the pictures onto paper and then staple the pieces of paper together to make a little book. Include a front and back cover, as well as an introduction letter and Bible verse if you like! (See download.)

Picture Ideas:

PEOPLE: Daddy, Mommy, brothers and sisters
PLACES: house, back yard, church, playground, library, swimming pool.
THINGS: bed, blanket, clothes, various toys, cup, book, crayons, food, car.

Have Older Children?

You can use this idea with older children in your family too! Your older children may like to take the pictures for their book and put the book together themselves. They may like to include pictures of friends, teachers, neighbors and missionaries.

I am looking forward to hearing from you as you enjoy using a My Thank-You Book with your child or grandchild!

Why the Teddy Bear?

The Teddy Bear in this video is letting you know that the idea shared is great for little children!

My Street

My Street is a creative way to pray for your neighbors with your children. Years ago, I enjoyed using this idea with our daughters and it is fun for me to share it with you!

Here are some more details related to the information about My Street that I share on the video:

Praying for Neighbors You Have Yet to Meet

You may not know every neighbor on your street by name. Pray for them anyway! God will know exactly who you are talking about and He cares about them deeply. Pray for the opportunity to meet them and eventually you will be able to add their name to the back of their house card.

Use a Pencil

It could be helpful to use a pencil when you write the names of your neighbors on the back of the houses. Then if a neighbor family moves, you can erase their names and write in your new neighbor’s names.

Free Download

This prayer activity is available for free. You are welcome to download and print a copy for free to use with your children.

Printed Copy

If you would prefer to obtain a printed copy of My Street it is available for purchase in the Daughters of Decision Shop.

Knock, Knock! Come In!

Being home with your children provides you with a great opportunity to spend time in prayer with them. And Knock, Knock! Come In is a creative prayer activity that you might like to enjoy with your children!

See further ways to enjoy this activity here:

More than one child?

Enjoy this activity together taking turns praying in different rooms in the house.

Only older children?

Omit the “knock, knock, come in” step. Visit different rooms of the house together to pray as the video shows. You may wish to encourage more than one person to pray as you visit each room.
